Most people know about the secret shopping gig. Either you have heard about friends who have tried it, you have done it yourself, or you have heard about it on tv or the Internet. No matter how you know about secret shopping or mystery shoppers, chances are that you have thought about doing it. So, you’ve taken the time to search through the internet and seek out the different companies that do secret shopping. But, how do you know that they are legitimate? Here are some tips and red flags to help you know which companies are legitimate secret shopper providers:
1. When you are looking at a company’s site, they should tell you all you need to know about their program and how their secret shopping gig works. If there is no information, or you have to enter a lot of personal information or pay for the information, then this is probably not a good deal for you. The true secret shopper companies don’t make their shoppers pay for information about them or their company.
2. While searching out the secret shopper or mystery shopper sites on the net, don’t get caught up in the sites that will offer you a great list of companies that do secret shopping or mystery shopping for a fee. These sites will only give you the same information that you can find on your own if you just keep searching. You should never have to pay for information or a list of these companies when you cann gind them easily on the net.
3. Check with the Better Business Bureau. If you find a company and you are a little leary about them, you can always check with the BBB to see if they have any problems, law suits, or complaints. Most legitimate companies are registered with the BBB and you won’t have to worry about problems with them if you join one.
4. Realize that you won’t be doing these secret shops multiple times a day. Usually, these companies offer one to three shops a week, depending on where you live. If you live cloase to a big town or city, then you will have more opportunities to do shops, where as, if you live in rural community, you might not get that many.
5. When you are selected for a secret shop, make sure that you read all the information and know exactly what you are supposed to do or see. Most companies who hire secret shoppers are looking to make sure that their employees are doing a good job, their store is clean, and that the overall shopping experience is great with them. So, you should know what to look for and what to put down on your list if you see something that isn’t right. These companies do want to know what they can improve on, not just that everything was perfect!
6. Make sure that you know if you are to keep your recipts or how you are to turn in your purchases for reimbursement. This is a great way to get free stuff, but you have to know the rules of that company to ensure that you get your purchases for free, otherwise you are wasting time and money.
7. When you get an email from one of the secret shopper companies for a shop, answer it right away. Chances are that you are not the only one on their mailing list, and if you don’t grab the opportunity, someone else will. If you miss too many opportunities, they will remove you from their mailing list and you will have to go through their registration process all over again.
8. Make sure that you give true information about yourself, and the shop you have done, when you are registering or completing a form for the company. Knowing that they can count on you for truthful information will help you to gain more shops!
These are only a few of the tips that you need to remember when you are looking for, or completing, a secret shopping experience. While secret shopping is work, and you need to make sure that you do it correctly, it is also a fun way to get free items while shopping at some of your favorite stores. So, search out those companies and join up! You’ll get free stuff, a fun time at work, and you’ll be glad you did!
